Let there be light

Posted in Uncategorized at 22:08 UTC by Richard

I have the lighting installed and my furniture in place. Next up is the trim molding and the door molding. I only got one shot, so I am adding in a cool photo of Yakko.

Basement/Family room redesign

Posted in house at 10:07 UTC by Richard

On August the 9th, my roommate moved out of my house (I am a homeowner now) and I got a stick up my butt about that upper basement room that works as a family room. Pretty much the day after my roommate moved out, I ripped out the fugly pink carpet down there and cleaned out any junk I had sitting around. That stuff was dirty, stained and just plain awful. My overall plan is to install more lighting (since the only thing available is an overhead light and receptacles for lamps), give the room a dark, earthy color (think theater room with a big tv and great surround sound) and install wood flooring.

At this point the only money I’ve spent has been on the four sconce lights and materials for a recessed shelving unit that will neatly store my A/V gear. Most of what I’ve done is nothing, plan, nothing, plan some more, more nothing and do some awesome demolition. As you can see from the following photos, I’ve cutout the area where my shelf will be. I’ve also pulled off all the trim along the floor and doors. I still need to pull out the stuff in the laundry closet, but I’ll do that closer to when I am ready to paint.

I’ve also linked a few images of the plans I’ve drawn out. I do all this to make sure I know what the heck I’m doing before I do it. You can see my nearly completed shelf lying on the floor, now I just need to get into the wall, but I need to cut out the existing studs and build in the replacement support system. Hopefully that will be done soon, same with the lighting.

A goofy perl script for the distributed.net proxy

Posted in Intarweb at 00:04 UTC by Richard

Just yesterday I sat down with Jeff Allen, a good friend I work with, and we created this: http://backslider.net/ogrstats/bugjuice.html. It’s purpose is to parse logs from the distributed.net proxy and create some readable statistics from it. Jeff did most of the perl work since he’s quite a bit more talented with it than I, so kudos to him. We started with source pulled from FreeDCs forums, with alpha’s permission. Here’s the current 0.3.awesome version of the perl code. bugjuice

Read more about this in the Ars DC forum thread for this project.

A potential fix to a gparted + vmware issue

Posted in Computer Techmology at 08:30 UTC by Richard

The problem: within vmware you may experience an issue booting your virtual machine off of a gparted iso (the reason you would want to do this is to resize your partition) and you wind up with a black screen after it attempts to mount a scsi device for 20 minutes or so.

The fix: open up the .vmx file in a text editor and find the line that says ’scsi0.present = “TRUE”‘ and change “TRUE” to “FALSE”.

This solved my problem and vmware booted right up and I was able to resize the partition. I found the fix here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=685702

HUNGRY

Posted in Uncategorized at 01:55 UTC by Richard

So I’m really f’n hungry right, and here’s what food I have:

1 can of green beans
1/2 can of whole kernel corn
1/2 cup of milk
1 box of generic cheerios
1/2 bag of brown rice
2 slices of bread (one is crust because my roommate is a retard)
~2tbsp of strawberry jam

I gank some peanut butter from my roommate (because my roommate is a retard and eats all of mine) and make a crust and jelly sandwich and cook up some brown rice. Did I mention that it takes 35 minutes to microwave a cup of brown rice? 35 minutes! Holy shit! I’m hungry….

A Night at Eli’s

Posted in Uncategorized at 13:25 UTC by Richard

So I suck for never posting anything, probably because I don’t think I ever have anything interesting to talk about. Today I finally have something interesting to share.

Yesterday was the first game of the season for my Co-ed softball team, sponsored by Eli’s Bar & Grill (thanks guys!). The day started off with total embarrassment by the way of a 15-0 blowout, we couldn’t hit a ball to save our lives (we had a total of four base runners in four innings) and our first pitcher walked more batters than he didn’t. In Co-ed softball, if you walk a guy, he advances to second base, needless to say that padded the other team’s score a bit.

After that thrashing we all headed over to Eli’s for a jolly night of sloshing. Lots of beer, 151 and a cruel mixture of Wild Turkey, Rumplemintz and Jaegermeister (called a kickin’ turkey) were consumed. Needless to say, I was hammered drunk! To make things worse, my boss’s boss’s boss’s boss’s peer (same position, different department) was hitting on me and getting me to dance badly and I felt like a fool. On top of this, there was a pretty hot chick that I was diggin who was absolutely smashed, so that went no where.

Fast forward to closing time, I grab my shit, drop a $10 tip and start heading for the door. Well, a third chick I hadn’t even mentioned yet asks, “can you give me a ride home tomorrow morning?” OH SHIT! If that isn’t an invitation to get some action, I don’t know what is. She’s okay looking, but I was wearing beer goggles, so I don’t give a hump. We hop in the car, and she immediately says, “we should go over to Council Bluffs and get some beer and then make out.” Btw, bars in Omaha close at 1am and in Council Bluffs, they close at 2am. Fast forward to 1:45am, we’re in CB and I got a case of beer in the back seat and we’re in some random bar getting another drink. 2am comes around and we get thrown out, so we head to my place.

DAMMIT, my roommate is home. We decided to kick it in the basement where I have some sweet couches (leather for the win!) and have a bit more privacy. Keep in mind, we still have not “made out” and I’m trying to advance the situation. Not 10 minutes later did she FUCKING PASS OUT ON THE COUCH! Fuck. Shit. Fine, I go to sleep on the other couch.

A few hours later (I know this because the sun just came up) I get woken up to the sounds of snoring. I have a horrible hangover at this point and now I’m forced to deal with snoring. This isn’t quite as bad as a man’s version of snoring, but the idea that I am 4 feet away from a chick snoring in my basement…. 60 minutes later, my roommate wakes up and so does his daughter. He decides that it is a good idea to turn on some christian rock music… and turn it up real loud. WTF loud christian rock music?! 45 minutes of this torture (she’s just now waking up) and they finally leave to his parents place. She wants breakfast, so I oblige. We hit up Village Inn and I fulfill my original promise of taking her back to her car in the morning. $30 and 10 hours later, I have nothing to show for myself except a hangover and 11 Bud Lights in the fridge.. make that 10.

Computer upgrade; Linux distro upgrade?

Posted in Computer Techmology at 08:57 UTC by Richard

So I’m closing in on my target date of an upgrade to my gaming box, sometime in January, which of course means an upgrade to my linux box. Generally what I’ve done in the past several years is I upgrade my gaming box and move the discarded parts to my linux box. Seeing that I don’t game in Linux at all, newest of the new hardware is never needed. As far as hardware, I know mostly what I’m going to get, check it out:

  • Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150
  • PNY VCG88GTSXPB GeForce 8800GTS 640MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16
  • FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX400-PN
  • CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
  • GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Socket T Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz
  • Scythe SCNJ-1100P 120mm CPU Cooling Fan

The Raptor will be going directly to the linux box since I do more disk intensive stuff there, the rest to the gaming box. My big problem is that this is an expensive upgrade. That video card is kinda pricey… so, anyone need a 7800GTX? Also, since I’ll be moving my Athlon 64 X2 3800+ to linux, I can finally mess around with a 64-bit distro. Being a Slackware guy, I immediately think of Slamd64. Unfortunately, my favorite add on, Dropline Gnome does not have a 64-bit version and Slackware has no gnome applications. UGH! I have about a month to figure out what to do, but there are some unofficial DLG64 packages (as it is becoming to be known) out there and I can probably work out the rest of the details, possibly having to compile some of the apps myself if I have to.

Oh right, sorry about four months of no updates, my bad.
