Bigass game table

Posted in house at 11:04 UTC by Richard

A couple of months ago I built a gaming table with a couple of friends (thanks Dave and Kevin). The top is 8′x4′ and is big as hell. I’d put some photos up, but I’m lazy lazy lazy. In any case, I’m nearly finished using filler, both bondo and spackle. Bondo for the big fills, where two boards meet together also for larger areas of wood imperfections. Spackle for the small nail and screw holes, as well as in small areas with imperfections in the wood. In addition to being nearly done with the filler, I’m also nearly done with sanding it all down. Once I deem it finished, I will go over it one more time with spackle and sandpaper to get it to the point where I am happy enough to paint it. Photos to come!

I finished a couple kitchen projects

Posted in Uncategorized at 15:51 UTC by Richard

I had been putting off a couple things in the kitchen. First I filled this dumb hole that the previous owners had created which you can see below. Now that it is filled in and painted, I finished up my project of getting an amp installed and a speaker setup on top of the catwalk.

After that, there were two electrical outlets on the bottom side of the catwalk up above, with some help I relocated them to the topside so they would be unseen. Well, just recently I patched over and then textured the holes on the bottom side. Today, I painted them.

We also just got bullrushed by a ton of snow today, it’s still coming down like crazy too.

Let there be light

Posted in Uncategorized at 22:08 UTC by Richard

I have the lighting installed and my furniture in place. Next up is the trim molding and the door molding. I only got one shot, so I am adding in a cool photo of Yakko.

Basement/Family room redesign

Posted in house at 10:07 UTC by Richard

On August the 9th, my roommate moved out of my house (I am a homeowner now) and I got a stick up my butt about that upper basement room that works as a family room. Pretty much the day after my roommate moved out, I ripped out the fugly pink carpet down there and cleaned out any junk I had sitting around. That stuff was dirty, stained and just plain awful. My overall plan is to install more lighting (since the only thing available is an overhead light and receptacles for lamps), give the room a dark, earthy color (think theater room with a big tv and great surround sound) and install wood flooring.

At this point the only money I’ve spent has been on the four sconce lights and materials for a recessed shelving unit that will neatly store my A/V gear. Most of what I’ve done is nothing, plan, nothing, plan some more, more nothing and do some awesome demolition. As you can see from the following photos, I’ve cutout the area where my shelf will be. I’ve also pulled off all the trim along the floor and doors. I still need to pull out the stuff in the laundry closet, but I’ll do that closer to when I am ready to paint.

I’ve also linked a few images of the plans I’ve drawn out. I do all this to make sure I know what the heck I’m doing before I do it. You can see my nearly completed shelf lying on the floor, now I just need to get into the wall, but I need to cut out the existing studs and build in the replacement support system. Hopefully that will be done soon, same with the lighting.

A goofy perl script for the distributed.net proxy

Posted in Intarweb at 00:04 UTC by Richard

Just yesterday I sat down with Jeff Allen, a good friend I work with, and we created this: http://backslider.net/ogrstats/bugjuice.html. It’s purpose is to parse logs from the distributed.net proxy and create some readable statistics from it. Jeff did most of the perl work since he’s quite a bit more talented with it than I, so kudos to him. We started with source pulled from FreeDCs forums, with alpha’s permission. Here’s the current 0.3.awesome version of the perl code. bugjuice

Read more about this in the Ars DC forum thread for this project.

A potential fix to a gparted + vmware issue

Posted in Computer Techmology at 08:30 UTC by Richard

The problem: within vmware you may experience an issue booting your virtual machine off of a gparted iso (the reason you would want to do this is to resize your partition) and you wind up with a black screen after it attempts to mount a scsi device for 20 minutes or so.

The fix: open up the .vmx file in a text editor and find the line that says ‘scsi0.present = “TRUE”‘ and change “TRUE” to “FALSE”.

This solved my problem and vmware booted right up and I was able to resize the partition. I found the fix here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=685702

HUNGRY

Posted in Uncategorized at 01:55 UTC by Richard

So I’m really f’n hungry right, and here’s what food I have:

1 can of green beans
1/2 can of whole kernel corn
1/2 cup of milk
1 box of generic cheerios
1/2 bag of brown rice
2 slices of bread (one is crust because my roommate is a retard)
~2tbsp of strawberry jam

I gank some peanut butter from my roommate (because my roommate is a retard and eats all of mine) and make a crust and jelly sandwich and cook up some brown rice. Did I mention that it takes 35 minutes to microwave a cup of brown rice? 35 minutes! Holy shit! I’m hungry….
