So yesterday, for several hours, this site and others on the server were mostly unreachable. At first I thought something wrong like the kernel panicked or I was being DOS’d. Well, funny thing, that was not the case and in fact, my friend who also hosts his site on this server, put up a somewhat large file for a few of his friends to download. Apparently so much outgoing traffic was happening from this one file, it basically tore up our entire server (no permanent damage). Anyways, check this bandwidth graph out:

So I changed my wordpress theme, the other was too… default for my tastes. I hope it looks okay, not that many people are reading this page, but that’s not the point! Looking good is certainly the most important thing. I also did some spring cleaning on all my computers, four in all. I turned on the air compressor out in the garage and “dusted” out all four of em. What a dust storm!

Right now for my surround sound setup, I’m using one of those “home theatre in a box” packages from Onkyo. They’re pretty decent really, considering that they don’t cost much. Knowing that there are considerably better setups out there, I’ve been wanting to improve what I have for quite some time. Since I have a 5.1 speaker setup, and my tuner supports 6.1, I was thinking of upgrading my center channel and moving the old one to a rear speaker position. The biggest problem I’m running into is that highly recommended centers tend to cost quite a bit, but I think I’ve finally settled on one. Here’s the new center I’m considering: http://www.axiomaudio.com/vp100_main.html.

So I mentioned about a day and half ago about upgrading to wordpress 2.0. Well, approximately 10 hours after upgrading, they released 2.0.1. AWESOME. I upgrade and in less than a day, I’m depricated. Time to upgrade again.

Just a couple things, I upgraded to wordpress 2.0 last night and this is my first post using it. I gotta say, pretty decent upgrade. I don’t believe it was available before, but there is a blogger import utility now, so I’ve imported all my old posts from blogger and all the comments contained within that site as well. I’m probably going to wipe out all my blogger material shortly as a result.
On the thought of randomness, my power went out for 90 minutes today. My primary UPS for my three computers in my room started running out of juice within 3 minutes until I powered the first and then the second off. The last computer started sucking the remaining power fairly quickly as well. On the otherhand, the UPS that powers my router (an old compaq desktop computer running freebsd), went strong for the entire 90 minutes.
So did anyone watch the president’s state of the union address? I caught the end of it and was pretty unimpressed, but whatever. The “Democratic Response” given virginia state governor, Tim Kaine, was mildly impressive. He’s certainly a better speaker than Bush, but the speech didn’t really do anything for me.
I’m done with random blathering for now though, stay safe.

So the Superbowl is next Sunday, pretty sweet eh? I’m a Seattle fan, have been ever since I was a kid. The very first NFL game I ever attended was in Kansas City when I saw the Chiefs and the Seahawks play (I think I was 7 or 8 years old). Ever since then, I’ve following the Seahawks and have been a fan. I’ve been waiting for a long long time for them to make it to this game, the last several years with their disappointing seasons has been difficult. Anyhow, quick prediction, Seattle 23 Pittsburgh 19

For whatever reason, I’ve completely put off this site, no more I say! I promise to keep this thing updated more than just twice a year and home to update it weekly or possibly more often. If I don’t, feel free to spam me with email telling me how much of a slacker I am. BTW, the school thing, not happening this semester, I’m continuing to save money and hope to reevaluate my situation later this spring.

So I was driving home today from work staring directly into that big ball of fire in the Eastern sky when it hit me, “Maybe you should quit your job this winter and go back to school!” And to be honest, it didn’t seem all that crazy. It’d cost me somewhere around $4500/yr in tuition/fees/books to attend the University of Nebraska-Omaha (UNO) which doesn’t seem so horrible. I’ll have to think on this one a bit, I have three months before this would ever become reality.

Here I am posting from Humble, Texas, just outside of Houston. I’m staying here with my grandparents until tomorrow. I arrived on a 737 Saturday morning with my Mom and Brother, I’m expecting my Dad to show up as well, good times, good times. Except that I’m coming down with a cold and the change in locale/climate is messing with my allergies not to mention my brother isn’t handling being here very well.
When I got here, I found out that several of my Grandparents’ neighbors don’t have a secure wireless network (woot wifi broadband) allowing me a decent connection speed. Admittedly, the connection has been a bit spotty, but usable enough (moreso than dealing with dialup). On the computer front, I picked out a new computer for my granddad, its a really really cheap compaq (yes, they’re still made by HP) for $802 after tax and before $410 worth of rebates. I picked him out a 17″ lcd which I believe he’ll really like. It’s a cheap, but still very usable computer, its spec’d out well enough for anyone to use as a internet computer w/ 512MB of RAM.
I’m not good at segways, so no attempt here, but I’m not quite sure what to think about this hurricane. I was at work when it started to blow up into a cat 3, then 4 and then 5 all in the same night, and this was several hours after the New Orleans mayor had issued a voluntary evacuation with everyone expecting a mandatory evacuation. It’s amazing to see that many stubborn and ignorant people stuck around anyways apparently expecting it to be no big deal. When the mayor and governor tell you to get the fuck out and the president declaring it a state of emergency well over a day before the ‘cane hit, it’s time to GET THE FUCK OUT. It’s obviously more complicated for a lot of folks who may have been financially and physically unable, but if you’re well enough to leave, you should’ve left. Period.

A couple quick blurbs I want to go over. Over the past few months, my carpal tunnel or tendonitis or whatever you want to refer to it as in both of my hands has really gotten bad. I say bad because quite often I have either pain or tingling sensations in various fingers or parts of my hands. I’ve sufferred it to a small degree for about 6 or 7 years now, but it is never more than just a flare up and goes away, well this isn’t going away, it just either gets slightly less painful or slightly more painful. I’m a bit worried about it and am planning on seeing a specialist soon.
Final Fantasy XI. This game still occupies most of my gaming and computer time, which can sometimes occupy much of my free time. I hit level 70 warrior over the weekend which is very cool and my character is starting to become quite powerful, though I’m still lagging in much of the really high end equipment. I don’t see myself giving up on this game anytime soon, though I think I will start to slow down a bit due to the problems I already mentioned about my hands and wrists.
I have a bit of money saved up and was about to pull the trigger on buying a new car, I decided not to since I just paid off my current car. Now that I’m not paying payments, I’ll have even more spending money (which I haven’t spent in a long time). I’m starting to think I’m going to finally pull the trigger on getting a computer upgrade. Helll, I may just build an entirely new computer from scratch which I haven’t done in a long time. All I’ve done in the past 4 or 5 years is just upgrade one or a few parts at a time.
Til next time, trust nothing you hear from Donaald Rumsfeld.
